Electronic process to be implemented for surgeons to validate pathology findings

At many UPMC hospitals, the surgeon is required to validate a patient’s pathology findings as being consistent with the surgeon’s clinical diagnosis. To improve efficiency and timely completion of this documentation, the paper process will be eliminated and a new electronic process will be implemented to obtain pathology validation from surgeons.

On Mondays, surgeons will receive notification in their Horizon Patient Folder (HPF) work list that they have electronic forms they need to complete to meet the pathology validation requirement.

With a few keystrokes, the surgeon can note whether he or she agrees or disagrees with the pathology findings, sign the form electronically, and submit the completed form.

This new electronic system using HPF will be implemented on Monday, Dec. 12, at UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside, Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC, UPMC Mercy, UPMC McKeesport, UPMC Northwest, UPMC Passavant, and UPMC St. Margaret.
